Next Positive Birth Group Meeting is Feb 27 at 7pm

childbirth courses, maternity classes, positive birth

Our last Positive Birth Group meeting went well. January’s theme was images of birth. Our discussion centred around how media has created our visual images of birth and how we can change that images we hold in our mind by watching videos of good births.  We also shared some of our favorite birth videos including my life birth footage and some of my inspirations.

The next Positive Birth Movement Meeting is coming up Wednesday, February 27 at 7pm.

The theme for this month is ‘Language of Birth’.

childbirth courses, maternity classesDo the words we use around birth and do they matter? What are the words? How do they make you feel?  Is it a ‘contraction’, a ‘surge’, or a ‘rush’? Is a baby ‘delivered’ ‘caught’ or something else? Is labour ‘painful’, or ‘powerful’? What words do people associate with birth and are these helpful or unhelpful?

We will start with our theme and will also discuss anything that comes up for those pregnant mamas and papas who attend. Continue reading

What’s Your Problem?

Many people think that their problem is the pain they feel. In fact many of us will go on ignoring our pain until that pain finally interferes with something we need or love and we finally take action on it.

But pain itself is not the problem. Pain is not a condition to be treated, although I just had a patient start in the office “diagnosed” with chronic neck pain. Chronic neck pain is not a condition, no pain is a condition, it is merely a symptom. It is a signal.

Just like the sound of your smoke detector is not a problem, it is a signal. If you turn off the smoke detector you have not solved anything all you did was turn off the signal.

Symptoms are not the first thing to show up when something is malfunctioning. Pain shows up when we exceed our are ability to adapt to the malfunction.

So when someone presents to our office in pain, we understand that you have hit your limit and it is impacting your ability to live your best life but we don’t want to focus on it.

Our goal is not to get rid of your pain. We don’t want to turn off your signal, numb your body, or say to your feedback system that we don’t care what you are telling us. What we want to do is respect that pain for what it is. Your body’s alarm system that something is malfunctioning.

From there we want to move forward and restore normal function to the body and help you understand the basic fundamentals you need to live your best life.

Positive Birth Movement

There is a movement starting and you can be a part of it.

WHAT IS ‘POSITIVE BIRTH’?

The Positive Birth Movement believes that every woman deserves a positive birth. But what does this mean?

A positive birth means a birth in which a woman feels she has freedom of choice, access to accurate information, and that she is in control, powerful and respected. A birth that she approaches, perhaps with some trepidation, but without fear or dread, and that she then goes on to enjoy, and later remember with warmth and pride.

A positive birth does not have to be ‘natural’ or ‘drug free’ – it simply has to be informed from a place of positivity as opposed to fear. The Positive Birth Movement is woman-centred and as such respects a woman’s human right to choose where and how she has her baby.

You can birth with positivity in hospital or at home, with or without medical intervention. You can have a positive caesarian, or a positive home water birth. Positive Birth is about approaching birth realistically, having genuine choice, and feeling empowered by your experience.

The Positive Birth Movement believes that communication is the key to shaking up birth. By coming together, in real life and online, and sharing experiences, feelings, knowledge and wisdom, women can take back childbirth.

What is a Positive Birth Group?

Positive Birth Groups listed on this site are all FREE to access, and POSITIVE about birth.

They are a place for ALL pregnant women – regardless of their background, experience or choices – to come together and share experiences, thoughts, feelings and insight about childbirth. There is often also tea and cake!

Some are run by birth professionals such as Doula’s, Midwives, or Childbirth teachers. Others are facilitated by women who are simply passionate about birth as a positive experience.

Positive Birth Groups aim to be a helpful part of your pregnancy; a warm and welcoming place to hear stories and ideas, to consider what you really want from your childbirth experience, and to challenge any fears or negative expectations you might have.

To find out more specific details about our group, please contact Dr. Nancy.

Ottawa – Ontario – Positive Birth Ottawa

2013 Meeting dates: January 23; February 27; March 27; April 24; May 22; June 26; July 24; August 28; September 25; October 23;November 27.

Facilitator: Nancy Salgueiro

“Women have been successfully birthing babies since the beginning of time and I believe YOU can do it to. I have had three incredibly wonderful natural home birth experiences in 2006, 2009, and 2011. I have supported many women through pregnancy and birth. I have seen how information, support, and belief in yourself, your baby, and birth can transform women, families, and lives forever.”

“For me an empowered birth is one where I am the one who makes the decisions for me and my baby. Where I am in an environment of love, support, and respect for the power within my body to successfully birth my baby. Where I can be free to express anything I need to express; sound, movement, fear, love, ecstasy in a place that my expression will not lead to interference from the outside. I believe women have the ability to create an empowering birth experience regardless of if the birth outcome is natural, medicated, or surgical. When women are making the decisions for their bodies and their babies out of education, faith, belief and confidence in themselves and not out of fear or manipulation they will be empowered. I believe in the human body, in it’s power, and in birth’s ability to transform a person, woman, wife, and mother.”

Is the Flu Shot Safe for Kids?

This article comes from Australia, who have banned Fluvax due to adverse reactions and questions of safety.

“Unprecedented decision to ban nationally all the seasonal flu vaccines for the under-5s.”

“Fluvax, the predominant vaccine, was triggering febrile fits in one in every 100 children – 10 times the expected rate. The side-effects, in some cases, were severe, and no-one could explain what had caused them.”

“By the time Fluvax was suspended, health departments across the country had notified the TGA of 410 adverse reactions among children younger than five.”

“To stop two or three children going to intensive care we had to immunise 600,000 people,” he says. “We need to be very careful before we recommend universal vaccination against influenza every year until we have better data. Otherwise we’re talking about faith-based medicine, instead of evidence-based medicine.”

“What is telling, however, is how lackadaisical health professionals – those in the front-line of any pandemic – have been about vaccinating themselves. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has discovered that barely one in four health and community workers bothered to get the free pandemic flu shot in 2009 – compared to 19 per cent of the adult population generally. Last year, just 6 per cent of children and 18 per cent of adults had been vaccinated against the flu. Asked why they shunned the flu shot, one in every six people cited “problems”, saying they thought the vaccine was “rushed and unsafe”.”

“The 2009 version of Fluvax was not tested in children, Greenberg explains, because “it is not routine to do clinical trials in children, it’s not required”.”

Massage therapy pays in the end

Massage therapy pays in the end.

Ever wonder just how much you spend on your car each year?

It can run to thousands of dollars, and that’s just for gas, oil and insurance. Then there’s the inevitable cost of repairs and maybe new tyres or brakes. The bill adds up. Funny thing is, we usually don’t hesitate to pay to keep our car on the road. And when the car gets old and cranky and starts to break down, we just trade it in!

Question is: how much money do you pay each year to maintain your BODY, because replacement parts and trade-ins are really not an option.

What happens as we age, get stressed, or succumb to low-grade fuel like junk food?

Maybe you already know how that feels. Do you spend more on your body than on your car?  It doesn’t need to be costly, and the benefits will far outlast any expense.

In fact a lot of it is free: you can de-stress by taking a walk, listening to music, or meditating. Try moving your body out of its comfort zone by stretching, striding and getting your blood moving.

You can also use any health-plan coverage for chiropractic care or massage therapy to achieve your very best muscular and joint health. If you don’t  have coverage or it’s not enough, set a monthly budget for maintenance work on your body so that you can live well now and avoid break-downs later!

It’s your body to live in and use how you please. Treat it right and it’ll run like a Rolls.

How Long do You Want to Live?

According to the National Post:  “Nearly everywhere around the world, people are living longer and fewer children are dying. But increasingly, people are grappling with the diseases and disabilities of modern life, according to the most expansive global look so far at life expectancy and the biggest health threats.”

So, how long do I want to live?  Well, that all depends, with what quality of life we are talking about?  If we are talking about living longer with more chronic disease, no thank you.  If we are talking about a long life filled with health and vitality, then sign me up.

Maybe people say they would rather enjoy their life now and live a shorter life but what if that lifestyle of excess doesn’t end your life early just destroys the quality of your life.

“If I knew I was going to live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself.”
Mickey Mantle

Thanks to modern medicine, the lifesytle of excess doesn’t necessarily kill you sooner.  We can now keep you alive longer through chemical intervention, i.e. drugs, but you will live with years, if not, decades of chronic degenerative disease.

“The biggest contributor to the global health burden isn’t premature [deaths], but chronic diseases, injuries, mental health conditions and all the bone and joint diseases.”

“Malnutrition was once the main health threat for children. Now, everywhere except Africa, they are much more likely to overeat than to starve.”

Overeating is actually worse for your long term health than slight undereating.

What we must always remember is that if we do what everyone else does we get what everyone else gets.  Right now what everyone else gets is high blood pressure, heart diease, and cancer.

If you want different, you must choose different.

Oh, It’s Not Going to Kill Them

http://realfoodfreaks.com/2012/12/10/oh-its-not-going-to-kill-them/#comment-6908

I know you’ve heard it… maybe you’ve even said it.  This statement drives me insane.  Do you want to know why?  Because it’s always (almost always?) said to justify feeding complete garbage to kids.  More specifically, my kids.

I don’t know about you, but I’m aiming slightly higher than just keeping my children alive.

“And please don’t tell me that it’s just my “preference” to make the food choices that I do.  It’s a heck of a lot more than that.  It’s about doing my best to protect the current and future health of myself and my family.  It’s about taking my responsibility to care for the planet seriously.  It’s about supporting local farmers rather than factory farms.  It’s about taking a stand against the exploitation and abuse of people in other countries by unethical and wickedly powerful corporations.  It’s about doing what’s right to the best of my knowledge and ability.  It’s about using my resources wisely.

So c’mon, give me a little help here.  Let’s think about what we feed kids (and ourselves) a bit more thoughtfully.  Let’s aim for something better than just not killing them, shall we?”

Barrhaven Chiropractor, Dr. Nancy’s Comments

Beautiful!  My kids thankfully have never eaten at a crappy fast food restaurant and don’t know what the golden arches means.  Its so much more important than most people realize.  Why do kids get the worst possible quality food when they are the ones growing so rapidly?  You are right, its not a treat, it poison.  Dark chocolate is a treat not a candy bar (notice its not actually called a chocolate bar because its mostly sugar and therefore a candy and not a chocolate).  We treat our kids with homemade cookies made with honey or real maple syrup, whole grain flour and fruit purees.  We are not depriving them (as my mom would say).  Actually I am depriving them, I’m depriving them of cancer, heart disease, irritable bowel, the list goes on.  Love this article.

Bumptabulous

Enjoy this New Book for the Holidays

Dr. Nancy is featured in a new book!

20 laugh-out-loud-funny moms describe their pregnancies, revealing the secretly-guarded details of their conceptions, the great and gross about pregnancy, the truth about childbirth and how their life changed once their little womb-hijacker finally came out.

From the book: I was 15 when my doctor told me, “Rachael, you will never have children.” I grew up thinking that I was going to be a lonely spinster with cats because my uterus was too scarred. (Rachael Miller); I gave birth to all three of my sons in the same hospital with the exact same anesthesiologist, whom they are all named after. (J.S.); Before kids, my husband would fill the tub with bubbles and wash my hair to get me in the mood. But after kids? Well, now my husband fills up the sink with bubbles and washes the dishes to get me in the mood. (Susie Johnson); Enjoy the stories of Becky Rappoccio, Christine Corbridge, Crystal Clancy, De’Vonne Batts, Erin Cohen, Hillary Chybinski, J.S., Julie Weckerlein, Louise Gleeson, Mandi Welbaum, Ellie Hirsch, Nancy Salgueiro, Nicole Keck, Rachael Miller, Rani Shah, Steph Calvert, Susie Johnson, Tat and Alinka Rutkowska. They’ve been pregnant more than 50 times in total and they sure do know what they are talking about, or rather writing about as all of them are bloggers and have been entertaining their readers for years. They will make you laugh, they will make you sigh, they will make you think and some might even make you cry! Get to know them one by one and follow their blogs after the read – it sure is an exciting one as many details have never been released before! No two stories are the same – we have different nationalities, different backgrounds, different number of children, different approaches to life. What the ladies do have in common is the ability to sit back, reflect and laugh. Not only that – as busy as they are, they managed to find the time to share the details of their conception, pregnancy, childbirth and the brand new life a.c. (after child).
